Stephan Bayer is a great film fan, whose childhood dream was to produce Hollywood films. He studied social sciences and business administration at the Humboldt University in Berlin when he discovered with his hobby video camera that educational films are easy to produce and offer huge added value for students. He developed the vision of filming all school knowledge in short, concise video tutorials and making it accessible online "on demand". Thus, in 2008, he founded sofatutor GmbH, an online learning platform for all subjects and all class levels. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, sofatutor.com already has over 160,000 paying users. Current curriculum content is clearly explained in more than 13,500 short videos and then consolidated with worksheets and interactive exercises. Open questions are answered by experts in a homework chat. In addition, weekly online tutoring sessions with a personal tutor can be arranged.
In addition to sofatutor, Stephan Bayer is committed to the further education and training of refugees in digital professional fields such as web development. Together with kununu managing director Steffen Zoller and entrepreneurs, employees and freelancers of the start-up scene, he founded the Digital Career Institute to counteract the lack of skilled workers in a rather unusual way with their project DEVUGEES - a combination of refugees and developers. Asylum seekers who have fled and are entitled to stay are trained to become programmers in a one-year advanced training program to facilitate their integration into the German job market and at the same time to attract well-trained young developers. From Ruby on Rails to CSS, the participants learn everything that is in demand in the tech scene. In addition to the practical training, the fugitives attend a language course to facilitate their holistic integration. The further education program, which is sponsored by the Federal Employment Agency, started in September 2016 for the first time in Berlin. Since April 2017, the first class has also been available in Düsseldorf. Further locations are planned.
